NED ESCHER died Feb. 3, 1993, of cardiac arrest, seven months shy of his 80th birthday. For most of his life, he lived in Fairfield County, Conn. Since his retirement in the early 1980s, he resided at Redding Rd. with his widow, Sarah Hubler Escher, who he married in 1968.

Ned was born in Summit, N.J., Sept. 22, 1913. He attended the Lawrenceville School before entering Princeton. At Princeton, he studied economics and was a member of Cottage Club.

Ned owned and operated Norwalk Fabricators, a regional manufacturer of steel vessels and an early maker of aluminum and fiberglass pressure vessels. At its height, the firm had seven production plants throughout the Northeast.

His lifelong interests included the study of the language, history, and culture of France. Since the 1960s, Ned had maintained a residence at CrestVoland (Savoie) and later at Dragignon (Provence) in France.

He is survived by his widow, Sally; by three children from his first marriage, to Edith Constance House (deceased): Lianne S., Richard R, and Gustave E. III '67, *71; by five stepchildren: Drusilla Escher Malavese, John G. Jr., Cynthia Escher Hamilton, Charles W, and Derek M.; by several grandchildren; and by one greatgrandchild.
