Garrett Winder Nevius ’36

Gary was born in New York City and attended Episcopal High School. At Princeton he majored in politics and belonged to Colonial. He earned a law degree at Columbia and joined the Army Corps of Engineers. He became a lieutenant colonel and was involved with the atomic bomb project.

Gary practiced law in New York City and married Lourie Flagg in 1949. The couple moved to Torrington, Conn., when Gary started practicing law in Hartford. Sadly, Lourie died after a heart operation in 1959, but happily Gary met Mary Ellis Peltz, and in 1960 they embarked on a 48-year marriage. Some years later, Gary joined the Connecticut National Bank. He retired as a vice president in 1977.

He is survived by Mary; a son, John; three daughters, Nancy Bacon, Christy Nevius, and Mary Lansing; a brother, Peter; and one grandchild.

Gary was intellectual, charming, witty, and very well-liked. His inquisitive nature made him knowledgeable and adept in many activities — particularly outdoor and athletic ones.

We send our sincerest regrets to his family. Gary’s death is a big loss for us all.
