George Archer Harkins ’50

Body

GEORGE HARKINS died of lung cancer July 5, 1993, one week before his 66th birthday. A retired pediatric surgeon, George had returned to Norfolk from NYC several years ago, when he married Julia Yuill. He was fondly remembered by a colleague in Norfolk as a "superb champion of children' and by another as "a communicator as well as a fine doctorwhat a wonderful combination!"

George came to the class from Hill School after a year in the navy, played end on the football team for three years, and majored in history, graduating with honors. Deciding on medicine after graduation, he spent a year at Centre College and graduated from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1955. Three years of surgical training at Hopkins were followed by two of cardiac surgery in San Francisco and three more of pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital in Boston. In 1963, he brought a team of heart surgeons to Norfolk that developed an excellent program at the Eastern Virginia Medical Center. In 1978, he was one of halfadozen founders of Lee's Friends, a hospice named for his daughter, who died of cancer that year. He retired from practice in 1986.

He is survived by his widow, Julia; his son, Monte; four stepchildren; and by brother Donald '56. To each, the class extends its deepest sympathy.
