George Austen Jr. ’30
GEORGE AUSTEN DIED Dec. 10, 1991, in Lynchburg, Va., where he retired after a distinguished career in medicine. George came to Princeton from the Hill School. During freshman and sophomore years he roomed with Walter Smith and during junior and senior years with Nick Petry and Don Dodge. He was a member of Cottage Club, the Right Wing Club, and Triangle Club, and carried his letter on the baseball team.
Following Princeton he obtained his medical degree at Harvard. After his internship, he served in the Army Medical Corps, and following his discharge he practiced urology, while teaching at Harvard, until 1952. He then taught urology at Western Reserve Univ., until 1958, when he accepted an assistant professorship at Boston Univ. In 1973 he became head of urological services at Jamaica Plain Veterans Hospital. George was president of the Boston Surgical Society and the Northeast Section of the American Urological Assn. He was the author or coauthor of some 35 articles in surgical journals and occasional chapters in medical books.
George's first wife, Sarah, died in 1982. He is survived by his widow, Sally, whom he married in 1983; his son George 111; two daughters, Sally Adams and Julia Austen; two step daughters, Mina Wood and Elizabeth Lutsk; and by three grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and two greatgrandsons. To them we extend our deepest sympathy.
