George Chalkin ’31

WHEN GEORGE CHAIKIN DIED in San Diego on Aug. 8, 1992, our Class lost a member who had pursued a unique career. Professionally George was a mechanical engineer, initially in the Flushing, N.Y., area and in later years in San Diego, He is undoubtedly chiefly remembered for his participation as a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade during the Spanish Civil War; he remained active in that organization until his death.

During WWII he aided the war effort by turning his engineering skills to the defense industry.

He was active in the Federation of Architects, Engineers, Chemists and Technicians; C.I.O.; Boy Scouts; and P.T.A. His obituary notice characterized him as a champion of peace and justice. His wife, Elizabeth, predeceased him. He is survived by two sons, George and Raven Earlygrow; a daughter, Harriet Coyne; sister Mae Seerkin; and four grandchildren. The Class of 1931 sends its condolences to George's family.
