George Clifford Buell ’51
GEORGE DIED in Boston on Nov. 15 from complications after hip surgery.
He graduated in 1952 because he took a year off to work in a N.Y. settlement house. This was an indication of his life's orientation. He was a teacher and historian (Williston, Charles Wright, and Milton Academies) and headmaster of Millbrook School in N.Y. After Milton, his last academic post, he was on the staff of Freedom from Chemical Dependency, a high school drug education program in Needham, Mass. Since 1985, George had been a drug and alcohol counselor at Edgehill Newport in R.I.
George was a graduate of St. George's School. At Princeton he was a history major, a member of Ivy and of the Rugby Club.
Classmates and other Princetonians came from near and fur to his memorial service. Among them were John Wiseman from Mexico City (best man at his wedding); Ben McAlpin; Bill Griffith; John Matthews; and Tom Knight '52. .
These words, from his family, are the more poignant because George had overcome alcoholism; "We are so grateful for the life of George Buell. He showed us the way to live through his devotion to others . . . his teaching, coaching, counseling, his ability to take his recovery and bring it to someone else. He was our hero . . ."
George is survived by his wife, Janet; his mother; sons George Jr. '79 and Samuel; daughters Lisa Piemont and Rebecca; brothers William '46 and Thomas '49; and three grandchildren.
The Class mourns the death of this remarkable human being.
