George E. Hale III ’50

Body

George Hale died Jan. 11, 1995, in a Pasadena, Calif., hospital of a rare blood disorder, from which he had suffered for several years. George was born and raised in Pasadena, where he attended the Polytechnic School. Prior to Princeton, he boarded at the Cate School in Carpinteria, Calif. He was at Princeton under the N.R.O.T.C. program, majored in history, and was a member of Colonial Club. His roommates were Hugh Noyes, Tony Reynolds, Ed Jones, Hank Rentschler, and Joe Tilt.

After graduation, he served aboard the cruiser U.S.S. Helena during the Korean War, leaving the Navy as a Lt.(j.g.). He subsequently sold Hobart food machinery in Cuba and glass products for Owenslllinois in San Francisco, before returning to Pasadena, where he sold and developed real estate. He served as president of the local board of Realtors and the Humane Society and as a trustee of the Polytechnic School. George was an accomplished cook and returned regularly to San Francisco to participate with his long-time gourmet cooking group. Shortly before his death, he had attended a cooking class at the Hotel Cipriani in Venice given by Julia Child, an old family friend.

George's family and friends will greatly miss his warm, always cheerful personality and his quick wit. George was only married for a brief time many years ago; he is survived by his younger brothers, Brack and Sam.
