George F. Schmucki ’41

Body

Our class president, George “Bud” Schmucki, died Aug. 2, 2010, from a fatal fall at his home in Morristown, N.J.

Although Bud was born in Rochester, N.Y., he grew up in England. He graduated from St. Edward’s School (England) and then from Ecole Nouvelle La Châtaigneraie (Switzerland). At Princeton, he majored in economics and joined Dial Lodge.

Bud enlisted in the Army in 1942, was commissioned, and attended the military intelligence school. He first served on the intelligence staff of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower before joining the intelligence staff of Gen. Omar Bradley for the balance of the campaign through Europe. Awarded the Bronze Star, he was separated in 1945.

Bud held various executive positions with Litton Industries, Dictaphone Corp., Hammond Map Co., and Forbes Associates. In 1981 he became director of administration for Princeton’s development department, beginning a 22-year career that culminated in his appointment as the fifth recording secretary of the University.

He was on the governing board of the Princeton Club of New York and treasurer of our class for almost 30 years.

Bud is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Riley Schmucki; their three children, Lisa ’74, Ross ’77, and Kristina ’82; and six grandchildren, including Eleanor Oakes ’07.
