George Faunce III ’47

Body

OUR CLASS LOST one of its stars and dearest friends when George died Jan. 8, 1994, after a long battle with diabetes. George prepared at Exeter. After service as a naval officer during WWII, he returned to Princeton and graduated with highest honors. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1948. Recalled during the Korean War, he served in the navy for 22 months.

In 1954, George graduated from N.Y.U. Law School and worked as an assistant secretary at Hanover Bank. He later became president of AFCO Credit Corp., and, later, president of the Diners Club. In his last post, from which he retired in 1990, he was managing director of William M. Mercer, Inc., an employeebenefit consulting firm.

George devoted enormous energy to his business career, had a wonderful sense of humor, and had a considerable capacity for martinis. Most of all, he

cared for his family.

George served as majorreunion chairman, class president, member of the executive committee, and in several other positions as well. After completing his term as class president, he became president of the Princeton Alumni Assn.

George is survived by his widow, Sally, whom he married in 1949; his children, Theodore '73 and Rebecca, and five grandchildren, to all of whom we extend our deepest sympathies.
