George Fleury Melick Jr. ’45

Fleury died Feb. 8, 2017. He was born and raised in Morristown, N.J., and attended Morristown High School, graduating in 1941.

At Princeton he was the Princeton Broadcasting Service station manager and a member of the Westminster Society and Terrace Club. In 1944 he graduated cum laude in mechanical engineering and went on to earn a master’s degree in engineering from Columbia University.

During World War II, Fleury was an infantry instructor and depot officer in Tokyo. He met Florence Miriam Bevins there. They married upon returning to the States, and he remained in the reserves. He was drafted to fight in Korea. He earned a Bronze Star for serving his country in both wars.

Fleury worked for the Worthington Pump and Machinery Corp. in Harrison, N.J., as a project engineer in the research department. He was also a professor of mechanical engineering at Rutgers University. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Red Bank at Tower Hill.

Fleury was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Florence. He is survived by his four children, Robert ’72, Linda and husband William Reynolds, Judith Melick, and Karen Melick and wife Clare Thomas; sister Carolyn Derr; grandchildren Emily, Dean Reynolds ’07, Kelly, Keith, David, and Gregory; and one great-grandchild, Penny.
