George Franklin Reed ’56

Body

GEORGE REED died of cancer June 19, 1991, at the Univ. of Arkansas Hospital in Little Rock, at the age of 56. George came to Princeton from Mercersburg Academy and had a distinguished undergraduate career, graduating with honors in English and serving as president of both the Nassoons and Tower Club

After receiving his LL.B, from Penn. Law in 1959, George went to work for Morgan , Lewis . Bockius in Philadelphia. In 1967 he became general counsel to the Pennsylvania Dept. of Insurance, and in 1969 he was named Insurance Commissioner, serving in the cabinet of Gov. Raymond P. Shafer. In 1971 George and his wife, Anne, moved their family to Houston, when he took a position as general counsel and V.P. of American General Insurance Company. He ultimately became vicechairman of the board of the company, now known as American General Corp., and chairman and president of its investment advisory subsidiary, American Capital Management & Research, Inc.

George always found time to keep up outside interests, as a Savoyard in Philadelphia, and as a board member of Mercersburg, the Houston Symphony, and the Salvation Army, among others. As a displaced Northerner he came to love Texas, contributing much to his community, and he always maintained his interest in Princeton.

To George's widow, Anne, and to his children, Geff, Peter, and Carolyn, we offer our deepest sympathy
