George Frederick Unger III ’68

RICK UNGER, age 46, died at George Washington Univ. Hospital, of complications associated with the treatment of the HIV infection. Prior to attending Princeton, George graduated from public school in Orchard Park, N.Y. fie graduated cum laude with a B,S.F. in aerospace engineering. While at Princeton, he was a member of Elm Club and the outing club. He earned a master of science in aeronautics and astronautics degree from M.I.T. in 1969. fie worked in Washington, D.C., at the Naval Air Systems Command for twelve years, before joining NASA in 1980. At NASA, he was responsible for the research program that has successfully led to quieter helicopter designs. He had been a volunteer at the Whitman Walker Clinic, to sponsor free hepatitis B testing and education, and was a volunteer at the Carl Vogel Foundation, a local AIDS buyer's club. He was predeceased by his companion, Richard Coombe, in 1990. Survivors include his subsequent companion, Tim Mitchum; his parents, George and Betty Unger; and three brothers, Scott, Peter '72, and James.
