George H. Hand *39

Body

GEORGE HAND, professor emeritus of economics at Southern Illinois Univ. at Carbondale, died Feb. 11, 1992. He was 88. Born in 1903 in Wheeling, W.Va., George earned his bachelor's degree at West Virginia Univ. in 1928 before coming to Princeton for his graduate work.

Prior to Southern Illinois, George had taught at Denison Univ. (Ohio), Ohio Wesleyan Univ., and the Univ. of Vermont. He first gained national attention when he was released from the presidency of Fairmont (W.Va.) State College for defending a faculty member who was fired by the State Board of Education. During his six-year tenure as president at Fairmont, he steered the institution through national accreditation, won faculty salary increases, reduced teaching loads, and beautified the campus.

George was an active church man and worked extensively with the Boy Scouts, from which he received the Silver Beaver Award, Scouting's highest adult honor.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, a sister, and a brother. To all whom he held dear, the graduate alumni extend heartfelt sympathy.
