George Haywood Hawks Jr. ’36

AT 80, GEORGE DIED of leukemia Nov. 3, 1993. He prepared at St George's School. At Princeton, he majored in economics and was a member of Cap and Gown. He graduated in 1939 from Harvard Law, then worked on Wall St. During WWII, he spent two years as a lawyer in Washington, D.C., with the War Shipping Administration.

Until he retired in 1980, George was a longtime senior partner of Rochester, N.Y.'s prestigious law firm Nixon, Hargrave, Devans and Doyle. He specialized in tax, estate, and trust law.

For many years, George was recognized as one of Rochester's most active volunteer citizens, assuming leadership positions in many institutions, including Rochester's museum and science center, its mental health center, its general hospital, its philharmonic fund, and its regional hospital association.

He was a collector of French and American impressionist paintings. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and worldwide traveling.

George is survived by his widow, Ercil, whom he married in 1937; sons George H. 111 '64 and Albert K.; and daughter Victoria Lombardi; and 10 grandchildren. He was devoted to his family and community. We will remember him as a loyal Princetonian and classmate.
