George Herget ’58

Body

GEORGE HERGET DIED in New Orleans Sept. 11, 1994. George prepared at Baron Rouge H.S. At Princeton, he majored in the Woodrow Wilson School and was a member of Tower Club. He was also on the Orange Key and in Triangle. After graduation, he went to L.S.U. Law School and graduated at the top of the class. After a stint in the Army, George joined a prestigious Baron Rouge law firm.

George pursued his legal career for four years. Then, over the next several years, he found what he was meant to be doing with his life. He ultimately opened a second-hand bookstore in New Orleans, located, appropriately enough, on Magazine Street.

In the years that followed, George built a landmark, known for its gentle proprietor, who loved being among his books and cats. George became a connoisseur of the literature of Richard Wagner. Wherever the Ring Cycle was performed in the U.S., there also would be George, selling his books. Back in New Orleans, his bookstore always had a festive air to it.

George always had time to talk to his customers. Many of his customers became his friends. Some felt so much at home in the bookstore that they got married there. The bookstore was surely where George was meant to be. His untimely death deprived us of a man of great charm and value.

He is survived by his sister, Catherine Herget Zimmerman, and his brother, John. To them, the class extends its sympathy.

Herget’s Bookstore

We visited his bookstore in the late ’90s, a few years after George’s death. We chatted with the proprietor, and signed the Herget Guest List. She gave my kids a handful of beads, and we took some Herget bookmarks. One fell out of a book this morning, resulting in my research, to see if the shop was still there. It was a pleasant and memorable experience. I enjoyed reading this obit, and wish I had met him. Thank you.
