George Howard Johnson Jr. ’39

Body

George died Oct. 12, 2008, at home in Gladwyne, Pa.

A member of Quadrangle at Princeton, he was captain of our freshman and varsity soccer teams, which won two Middle Atlantic and two Big Three soccer championships.

George went on to serve in the Navy during World War II at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and then as radar officer aboard the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Wichita in the Pacific. He eventually accompanied four admirals who were among the first Americans ashore at Nagasaki just days after the atomic bomb was dropped.

In his business career, George spent 41 highly successful years in real estate — much of it as president of Philadelphia’s largest commercial real-estate firm at the time, Albert M. Greenfield & Co. George retired in 1980.

With our classmate, Dr. Arthur Silvers, George helped found (and chaired for several years) the Burn Foundation of Greater Dela-

ware Valley, which has helped thousands of burn victims. He was on hospital and corporation boards in Philadelphia and New York and belonged to the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, the Union League of Philadelphia, and the Philadelphia Country Club.

He is survived by Betty, his wife of 69 years; three sons; and four grandchildren. We offer them our sincere sympathy.
