George Irwin McIlwain ’22

"Porkey" McIlwain died on Jan. 18, 1989, in Mesa, Ariz., to which he had retired in 1970. He was born in N.Y.C. on May 23, 1900. After graduation, he moved west. On Apr. 2, 1923, he married Elizabeth R. Hayes in Santa Barbara, Calif. Their son, George R. Jr., died in 1966, and Elizabeth died in 1969. Their daughter Elizabeth, who lives in Anchorage, Alas., survives, as do seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Porky prepared for Princeton at the Hill School and Andover. He worked for a time with Standard Brands, B. T. Babbitt, and Previews, and in 1956 joined the real-estate and financial sections of Hughes Aircraft. In 1966, he started his own real-estate business in Santa Barbara, where he stayed until retirement. In 1982, he wrote that he was living alone in an apartment in Mesa and boasted of preparing his own breakfast. His father, a member of the Class of '92, was a charter trustee of Princeton and taught history at Princeton and Harvard. His grandson James Walton writes that, to the end, two things remained near and dear to Porky's heart: his days at "Po Ro Moonshine" (a boys camp) and at Princeton with us.
