George L. Schultz ’40

RETIRED BUSINESSMAN and noted philanthropist George Schultz died June 16, 1994, of a heart attack.

George was president of the Schultz Foundation, which contributed generously to several Princeton research projects In 1992, it donated $10 million to the nuclear-biology laboratory that bears his name. The foundation also gave to other university endeavors, such as the aerospace-engineering and flight-research laboratory. Many other organizations were also beneficiaries, including a program for leukemia research at N.Y.C.'s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

As an undergraduate and graduate student, George concentrated in chemical engineering and advanced organic chemistry. He belonged to Tower Club. After college, George joined Shulton, Inc., the family­owned toiletries company. He rose through the company's ranks, becoming president and C.E.O. in 1950. He served in that capacity until 1971, when the company was sold to American Cyanimid Co., and subsequently served as director until 1988.

George was on the board of trustees for Mountainside Hospital, served on Princeton's biology council, and was a trustee for Montclair Art Academy. Other interests included flying, tennis, sailing, amateur radio, skiing, music, and language study. Surviving are his widow, Mardie; four daughters; and seven grand­children. To all of them, we send our sympathy and condolences. The class was blessed indeed to have had George as a classmate and friend.
