GEORGE MORROW KAHRL, retired professor of English at Elmira (N.Y.) College, died Aug. 25, 1993. He was 90. He was born in Fairmont, W.Va., and got his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan Univ. in Ohio in 1926. He studied French during summers at the Univ. of Grenoble. A two-year teaching assignment followed at the American Univ. in Beirut, where he met his future wife. In 1928 he returned to the U.S., entered Princeton, and got his master's. He taught for one year at Kenyon College in Ohio, then went to Harvard, and got his Ph.D. there in 1936. Then Elmira College hired him as professor and chairman of the English dept., where he remained until retirement in 1971. He spent the next three years in England doing research on the career and writings of actor-producer David Garrick. His return to Elmira was crowned by the award of an honorary degree, doctor of literature, and by Kenyon College's invitation to teach several courses as a visiting professor. His wife predeceased him in 1989. He is survived by two sons, a brother, and nine grandchildren. To his family and his many former students, we extend heartfelt sympathy.
