George Nathan Cowen ’40

George prepared at Hotchkiss School, following his uncle, Edwin Cowen 1913, to Princeton. George majored in English, was on the freshman soccer and track teams, was manager of the 150-pound football team, and was a member of Orange Key and Charter Club.

From 1941 to 1946 he served in the Army as a lieutenant colonel in the Field Artillery and Transportation Corps in the American and Pacific theaters.

In our 25th yearbook George wrote, “I married the colonel’s daughter, Nan Fingarson,” in 1942.  

Joining the New York brokerage firm of Cowen & Co., founded by his father and two uncles, he became a full partner in 1948 as well as a member of the American and New York stock exchanges.

Along with his Annual Giving activities, George was class treasurer for five years. His hobbies and activities included the Community Fund, Cub Scouts, golf, skiing, swimming, tennis, and photography.

He was predeceased by Nan and is survived by his sons, Peter and George Jr. ’69, and by his granddaughter, Elizabeth Tarleton Sutherland ’05. To them, George’s classmates wish to offer their deep sympathies.
