George R. Lenney ’42

Body

George died Mar. 9, 1995, in Laguna Beach, Calif., his home for many years, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. He retired in 1984, after selling the children's clothing wholesale distribution business he and his partner had acquired in 1954. He then devoted most of his energies to restoration of the Waldorf, a seaside hotel in Venice, Calif., that was on the national historic register.

George came to Princeton from Cleveland H.S. in St. Louis. At Princeton, he studied at the School of Public and Intl. Affairs, graduating cum laude. He spent three years in the Navy aboard the battleship Nevada and the carrier Franklin, in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, as a lieutenant. After his discharge, he spent a short time in the stock brokerage business before acquiring a partnership interest in Kiddy-Klad, in L.A.

At the '42 mini-reunion in Bermuda in 1989, George shared his cancer problem with the class, in a never-to-be-forgotten vignette. Despite his rapidly declining health, he hosted the LaJolla mini last October, a memorable event. A dedicated Princetonian, he rediscovered the class at the 40th reunion and participated in most of the subsequent gatherings.

To his widow, Lida; his three daughters, Candice, Marina, and Laurie; his stepchildren, Chris and Lisa; and to his four grandchildren, the class offers its profound sympathies.
