George R. Quaile ’50

Body

George Quaile died in Austria in July of 1994 from a lung embolism. A native of Pittsburgh, Birdie attended Shady Side Academy and graduated from Episcopal H.S., where he was football captain and senior monitor. At Princeton, he majored in engineering and was a member of Cap and Gown.

Birdie joined the Navy aviation program in 1950 and served at various posts on the East Coast and on carriers until his release in 1955. Over the next five years, he operated several businesses in the Pittsburgh area.

For 30 years after that, we lost touch with Birdie, and had no address for him until one surfaced in a Shady Side directory. A good letter from him in 1990 said that he had lived abroad almost 30 years and was then dividing his time between Austria and London, where his wife, Maggie, was a fashion agent and where his daughter was still in school. He described himself as "virtually retired," and had sold his hotel in Austria.

To Maggie and his daughter, the class extends its deepest sympathy.
