George R Scheele ’57

GEORGE SCHEELE died Feb. 13, 1993, at New England Medical Center, of complications following a second liver transplant. George was diagnosed with liver disease 14 years ago but had no noticeable problems until he broke his leg skating last year. He continued to teach through the fall semester and entered the hospital in January.

At Princeton, George majored in chemical engineering. He was active in crew and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and joined Prospect Club. In his sophomore year, he roomed with Bruce Rosborough; his senior roommates were Jim Lewis and Dave Taylor.

He did graduate work at the Univ. of Illinois, achieving an M.S. in '59 and a Ph.D. in '62. He then joined the School of Chemical Engineering at Cornell Univ., where he spent his entire career, except for three oneyear leaves with Dow Chemical, DuPont, and as visiting professor at U.C.Berkeley.

George became associate director of Cornell's School of Chemical Engineering in 1982. His official area of specialty was fluid dynamics relating to jet dynamics and drop coalescence, but his real loves were his students and Cornell. He was honored with the Excellence in Teaching award and was a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. We remember him as an especially warm and friendly human being. .

George was born in Yonkers, N.Y., May 23, 1935, and lived in Ithaca for most of his adult life. He is survived by his widow, Carol; his mother, Madeline; his sister Judith; and two nieces.
