GEORGE RAYNOR THOMPSON, historian and classics scholar, died Apr. 18, 1994, in Newport Beach, Calif. He was 83. Dr. Thompson was born in Boston and spent his early youth on a farm in New Hampshire. He went to at Phillips Exeter Academy on scholarship and got his bachelor's from Harvard. He taught Latin and science for four years, then came to Princeton, where he studied classics. He served two years as Carnegie Research Fellow in the history of Greco­Roman science at Johns Hopkins and then four years in the navy, specializing in codes and ciphers. After that, he devoted his career to military history in the U.S. armed services. He retired in 1972 and was awarded the Army Meritorious Civilian Service Medal. Dr. Thompson then studied Greek botany. He is survived by his widow, Mary Z.; a daughter; and two granddaughters. A son, Wilson, died in 1971. To the entire family, we extend sympathy in the loss of this distinguished modern classicist.
