George S. Harrington ’39

Along with several from our class, George entered Princeton from Lawrenceville. He majored in chemistry. After getting a master’s degree from MIT, he began his career with DuPont. During the war he was assigned to explosives production. In late 1945, he transferred to the more peaceful plastics department. George (or “Pop,” as he was also known) worked for DuPont for 35 years, retiring in 1977.

 

George served his community as a trustee of the Marmot Foundation and Christiana Care Health System and also was a past president of the Wilmington Club. He was an avid fisherman and birder — activities that he especially enjoyed on Fishers Island, N.Y.

 

At Princeton his club was Charter, and his closest and lifelong friends were Bob Meech, Dick Murrie, and Det Detwiller. His older brothers were Charles ’33 and Willis ’35.

 

George’s wife of 52 years, Martha Pugh Harrington, predeceased him in 2005. He is survived by four children, including Ellen Campbell ’77, and 10 grandchildren. To them all, the class salutes the memory of this loyal and generous Princetonian.
