George Selbie Gordon ’41

Body

ON JAN. 16, 1993, George succumbed to pancreatic cancer at Martha's Vineyard Hospital, on whose board he had served.

After Phillips Exeter, George majored in chemistry; rowed on the crew; worked on the PRINCE, NASSAU LIT, and Orange Key; and graduated with highest honors, Phi Beta Kappa, and Sigma Yi. By happy circumstance, he found time to audit Roy D. Welch's music courses and subsequently wed the professor's daughter Anne.

George was battalion commander of his indoctrination class at Annapolis. After serving in the Navy, he earned a doctorate in chemistry from Northwestern and held executive positions at G.E. and other corporations. He retired in 198 1, following 17 years with the U.S. Dept. of Commerce.

George chaired Martha's Vineyard's Red Cross chapter and coordinated its blood drives. To escape the summer crowd , he and Anne built a cabin near Williamstown, which enjoyed "the best view in the Berkshires." Trekking in the Himalayas afforded him additional great mountain vistas.

When he took on our Fifty Year Book, George bought a computer and, almost singlehandedly, produced this splendid volume. Then he and Anne attended their first Reunions ever.

He is survived by Anne; a son, Peter '71; a daughter, Kate Gross; a sister, Nancy Elliot; and five grandchildren. They all have our deepest sympathy.
