George Townsend Derby ’25 *28

COL. GEORGE TOWNSEND DERBY, son of Col. George McClellan Derby, was born Jan. 14, 1905, and died in Naples, Fla., Oct. 28, 1992. He left us at the end of sophomore year to attend West Point. He was sent courtesy of the Army to attend the Princeton Graduate School, where he obtained his M.A. degree in mathematics in 1928. He retired as a colonel after 29 years of service in the U.S. Corps of Engineers. In WWII he commanded a regiment of engineers in New Guinea, and during the Korean War he was in charge of constructing an airfield in Morocco. After retirement in 1956, he worked with Ashland Oil Co. for several years.

He then lived in Princeton, before moving to Naples in 1970. His funeral was in Trinity by the Cove Episcopal Church, of which he had been a member. He was also an active member of the Princeton Club of South West Florida, the Greater Naples Civic Assn., and the Collier County School Board for which he had established pro grams for outstanding teachers. He was also a member of the Princeton Club of New York and the Army Navy Country Club of Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his widow, the former Virginia Williams; sons George (U.S. Naval Academy) and Roger W. '54 and their wives; a daughter and soninlaw, Mary and Domingo Conrado Almaral; six grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and a brother, Hasket '33.
