George Warren Arms ’33

WARREN ARMS died on New Year's Day, 1992, in Albuquerque. A memorial service was held on Jan. 'in the chapel of the Univ. of New Mexico.

Warren was born Feb. 1, 1912, in La Grande, Ore. He graduated from Duluth (Minn.) Central High and later lived in Brooklyn.

in college Warren was distinguished as a debater and scholar. He was an officer of WhigClio, and winner of the Class of 1876 Prize and of the MacLean Prize. He was secretary of Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of Gateway Club. He roomed with Warren Staebler.

After college Warren spent some years teaching at prep schools and colleges and doing graduate work at several universities, including Zurich, Munich, and N.Y.U. In 1945 he joined the faculty of the Univ. of New Mexico, where he became chairman of the English department and established the American studies program. Among other works, he was coauthor of two studies with our late classmate Bill Gibson.

On June 27, 1936, Warren married Elizabeth Tanner. She survives, as do his sister Mrs. Margaret Mason and two nephews, George Mason '65 and John Mason '66. The Class of'33 has lost a notable member and expresses sympathy to Elizabeth and the family.
