GERRY BUTLER died Sept. 26, 1988, following an operation for a brain tumor. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Gerry was born Jan. 25, 1938. He prepared for Princeton at Lakewood (Oh.) High School.

At Princeton Gerry majored in early and modern European history, and wrote his thesis on John Wesley. Gerry joined the Orange Key Guide Service, the Chapel Choir, and the Princeton Evangelical Fellowship, and took meals at Wilson Lodge.

He obtained a master's degree in history from Case Western Reserve Univ., where he also pursued a degree in art history. Teaching a history course entitled "Civilization and Man" in the 1960s at Lakewood High School, Gerry was cited as outstanding teacher of the year.

For three years Gerry was library assistant at the Cleveland Museum of Art and then became an art dealer, collector and scholar. His main interest was in the Cleveland School of Artists, which he studied and promoted. He left major works to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Gerry was respected professionally as a dealer and scholar, and also as a humble and wonderful person.

To Gerry's widow, Ruth Ellen; brother, James; and his entire family, the Class extends its deep sympathy.
