An international business leader and a major benefactor of Princeton, Gerry joined us junior year after graduating from the Bundes Realschule in his hometown of Linz, Austria.

At Princeton he joined Dial Lodge and majored in economics. He belonged to the International Students Association, the German Club, and the Pistol Club. He roomed with Bob Ely and Fred Lewis.

Gerry went on to attend Harvard Business School, graduating in 1954, and then served in the Army as an intelligence officer. He went on to a career in business — beginning at McKinsey and Co. and moving to leading roles at Esterline Corp., Levitt & Sons, and ITT. He then started his own outfit, Andlinger and Co. When not at the office he visited a number of the best places in the world with his wife and children, including sailing around the world in a ship built for him.

His gifts to Princeton include the Andlinger Center for the Humanities, the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, two graduate fellowships, and a faculty chair. He also made major gifts to the Salzburg Festival, Massachusetts General Hospital, and other institutions of value.

Gerry died Dec. 22, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; and his children, Merrick ’80, Nicole ’91, Tristan, and Margaret. Sadly, his son Gerhard II predeceased him. To his family, Gerry’s classmates send sincere sympathy and thanks for Gerry’s generous returns to the University.
