Gordan S. Gavan ’30
THE CLASS REPORTS with considerable regret and nostalgia the death of Gordon Gavan on Mar. 19, 1993. Gordy was a loyal Princetonian who served as V.P. and agent of his Class, taking a prominent part in our 30th reunion. Like many others, he prepared for Princeton at Montclair H.S., where he was on the track and crosscountry teams and played in the school orchestra. He continued these activities in college, where he belonged to a number of musical clubs. He enjoyed equally, as a true New Yorker, the dual role of man about town and countryman, playing squash rackets as avidly as he engaged in bird watching. In college, he was a member of Cloister Inn, and he later became a trustee. He roomed in Brown with R. W Stovel and then with G. W Ruckert. After graduation, Gordy entered the investment banking field and earned a place in the New York Society of Security Analysts. For 40 years he worked in the firm of scudder, Stevens and Clark, until his retirement in 1973. During WWII, he gave three years to the U.S. Navy, in which he served in the Pacific under Adm. Nimitz; he kept a lifelong membership in the Naval Reserve as a lieutenant commander. He supported other worthy organizations, including, as a trustee, the Youth Consultation Service of the Episcopal Church. In 1933, he married Edith Macpherson, who survives him, along with a sister, Phyllis Cochrane. He and his wife often vacationed in Maine and sometimes enjoyed European travel together. To both Gordy's wife and sister, the Class extends its deepest sympathy.
