GORDON R. WOOD *41, professor emeritus of English at Southern Illinois Univ. in Edwardsville, Ill., died Oct. 4, 1993, in Anderson Hospital, Maryville, 111. He was 80 years old. Born Feb. 27, 1913, in Charleston, WVa., he was graduated from and elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Davidson College in 1935. His master's degree was granted by Duke Univ. in 1937 and he received his doctorate in English from Princeton in 1941. Gordon devoted his entire professional life to scholarly writing and the teaching of English at several different schools, including Appalachian State Univ., Biarritz Army Univ. in France, Davidson College, his undergraduate alma mater, and the Univ. of Tennessee, prior to Southern Illinois Univ., which he joined in 1963. He is survived by his widow, Sara; a son, Reid; and two grandsons. To Gordon's family, we extend our expressions of deep sympathy.
