Guilford Jones Jr. ’38

Body

GIL JONES died June 27, 1992, after a long illness. He had suffered from manic depression for several years, and although his lithium medication was effective, it could get out of balance suddenly, and thus he had difficult periods and spent some time in veterans' hospitals.

Gil followed his late brother Richard '36 to Princeton. A member of Tiger Inn, he majored in philosophy and was manager of the baseball team. During WWII he flew bombers over Italy in the 12th Air Force, earning the Air Medal with three clusters and returning home unharmed. He settled in Wichita, Kans., where he worked in sales jobs while attending Wichita Univ. part time, earning his M.A. in 1954, a feat of which he was most proud. He was also a placement director and a teacher. But he always considered his time at Princeton his glory days.

Gil and his wife, Elizabeth, were divorced many years ago. He is survived by daughter Mary Richey, son Guilford III, sister Mary Emily Maguire w'4 1, niece Joan Maguire '8 1, and three grandchildren. They have our sincere sympathy.
