Gurnee Hinman Barrett Jr. ’39

Body

Hin died Aug. 25, 2010, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He had made his home there for many years. Hin once said, “Since childhood I have enjoyed the water and the countryside and I used to spend all my leisure time there.”

As an undergraduate he was enrolled in ROTC and his roommates gave him the nickname “The General.” During World War II he earned a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster after serving in the European theater. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel by the end of his service in 1946.

Hin’s working life was spent with large retail organizations in the United States and Canada.

In retirement in Charlottetown, Hin continued his education at the University of Prince Edward Island. He wrote, “I’m doing this because I think it may help me to understand why man behaves the way he does and what he might do about it.”

Hin is survived by his wife, Nancy, and adopted son, James Belardo. He also is survived by three children from his first marriage, Gurnee III, Vicky, and Catherine, and several grandchildren. To them all, the class extends its sympathy.
