Gustave Norman Johansen Jr. ’61

Body

Our Classmate Gus Johansen died on Feb. 11, 1989, in Arlington, Va., of cardiac arrest. He had suffered a cere¬bral hemorrhage in the previous week. Gus was with us at Princeton for only our freshman year and a brief period in 1959. In Aug. 1958, while working on a Prince¬ton scientific project in Montana, he suffered extensive brain injuries in an automobile accident, and he never fully recovered.

Gus was born in San Diego and, as the son of an officer in the U.S. Navy, spent his early years living at naval installations throughout the country. He prepared for Princeton at the Landon School, in Bethesda, Md., and he roomed during freshman year with Bill Green and Bill Rough. As therapy for his injuries, Gus practiced the piano. He became a skilled classical pianist and was well known at the National Cathedral, where he and his parents attended church services for many years.

Gus is survived by his parents, Rear Admiral Gustave N. Johansen, U.S.N. (ret.), and Anna M. Johansen. We are glad that Bill Rough and Bill Green were able to join the Johansens at the several services that were held in Gus's memory. The class joins them in mourning.
