Guy Martin Newland ’51

Body

He came to us from Kent School and at Princeton was in ROTC, majored in history, was in Orange Key, was president of Elm Club, and roomed with John Cochran, Sprigg Duvall, and Bill Godson. Spanish was as much his native language as was English.

Guy served in Korea as an artillery officer in the Army’s 1st Armored Division. He worked for Becton Dickinson, the surgical-instruments manufacturer, from 1953 to 1989 in Panama, Mexico, Latin America, and Spain. He spent the last 16 years of his life in Pittsburgh and on Chappaquiddick Island, Mass. Many classmates have fond memories of Guy leading them on two wonderful mini-reunions in Spain.

Guy was married for 40 years to Edna Mae “Eddie” Reed, who died in Madrid in 1990. In 1994 he and Joan M. Sawhill were married. Joan was Don Sawhill’s widow.

Guy died June 17, 2008, of congestive heart failure, as did his twin brother, Ross, before him. He is survived by Joan; his children Janne (Juanita) Ulloa, William, and Andrew; stepchildren Anne Franks, Russell Franks, and Leigh Gallagher; 12 grandchildren; and his sister, May Clary.
