H. Gates Lloyd Jr. ’23

Body

H. GATES LLOYD DIED at his apartment in Haverford, Penn., Nov. 11, 1993. He was 92.

Gates came to Princeton (where his father, H. G. Lloyd, was a trustee) from St. George's School at Newport, R.I. He majored in English, was pictorial chairman of THE DAILY PRINCETONIAN; chairman of BRICABRAC and the NASSAU HERALD; a member of the Senior Council and Triangle Club; president of Cap and Gown; and on the track squad.

After leaving Princeton, Gates attended Trinity College at Cambridge Univ. in England for a year before joining Drexel & Co., Philadelphia investment bankers, of which he became a partner in 1927. He was elected a director of Bryn Mawr Hospital.

During WWII, Gates served with the Philadelphia interceptor command. In 1950, he took a leave of absence from Drexel & Co, becoming deputy director for administration of the C.I.A. in Washington under Allen W. Duties. After retiring from the C.I.A. in 1964, he became chairman of The Contributorship, a Philadelphia mutual insurance corporation.

Gates served several terms as president and as reunion chairman of our class. His brother Richard W. Lloyd '26, predeceased him, but he is survived by sons H. Gates Lloyd III '50 and Wingate Lloyd '53; two daughters, Mary Robb and Prudence Rosenthal; 18 grandchildren; and 12 greatgrandchildren.

To them, the class extends deep sympathy in the loss of one its most outstanding classmates.
