H. GATES LLOYD died at his apartment in Haverford, Penn., Nov. 11, 1993, at the age of 92.
Gates came to Princeton (where his father, H. G. Lloyd, was a trustee) from St. George's School at Newport, R.I. He majored in English and was on the track squad; pictorial chairman of the DAILY PRINCETONIAN; chairman of BRICABRAC and the NASSAU HERALD; a member of the Senior Council and Triangle Club; and president of Cap and Gown.
After leaving Princeton, Gates attended Trinity College at Cambridge Univ. in England for a year before joining Drexel & Co., Philadelphia investment bankers, of which he became a partner in 1927. He was elected a director of Bryn Mawr Hospital.
During WWII, he served with the interceptor command in Philadelphia. In 1950, he took a leave of absence from Drexel & Co, becoming deputy director for administration of the C.I.A. in Washington under Allen W Dulles. Gates then joined Drexel, Burnham, Lambert in 1964. He was also a trustee of St. George's School and of Princeton.
Gates served several terms as president of our class. His brother Richard W. Lloyd '26, predeceased him; but he is survived by his sons H. Gates Lloyd III '50 and Wingate Lloyd '58; two daughters, Mrs. Mary L. Robb and Mrs. Prudence L. Rosenthal; 18 grandchildren; and 12 greatgrandchildren.
To them, the class extends deep sympathy in the loss of one its most outstanding classmates.
