H. Henry Bertram ’40

He was born in Montclair, N.J., and graduated from the Taft School. At Princeton, he majored in English, played freshman football, and was a member of Triangle Club and Cottage Club.

During World War II, he was a major in the Army under Gen. George Patton.

For 15 years, Hank was involved with retailing firms in various locations in the United States. He spent another 21 years in hospital management and retired as director of personnel at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1982. He served as president of the New York Hospital Personnel Association as well as president of the national hospital personnel group.

After his retirement, Hank and his wife, the former Leslie Smith, moved to Sea Oaks in Vero Beach, Fla. Leslie died in 1996, after 48 years of marriage.

Hank was a member of the Vero Beach Country Club, Maidstone Club, Devon Yacht Club, Coral Beach Club, and the Amagansett Beach Association, which he served as president. Golf and volunteer work at the local hospital and humane society were important to him.

Hank is survived by a son, Henry; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. To them, his classmates offer their sincere condolences.
