H. Jeremy Wintersteen ’57
JERRY WINTERSTEEN, missing at sea, is presumed to have died June 18, 1991. After attending St. Paul's School Jerry roomed at Princeton with Jay Lewis, John Scoutter and Dan Kirby. An English major and a member of Ivy, Jerry was cocaptain of our rugby team. He earned an M.S. at the Wharton School.
In an eclectic career, Jerry wrote for SPORTS AFIELD taught at Saint Bernard's School, edited the RESTAURANT REPORTER, produced plays, and worked at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He lived first In San Francisco and later in Manhattan and Prouts Neck, Maine.
He was a fine skier, tennis player, golfer, fisherman and hockey player. On the cultural side, he loved good food, wine, company, music, and art. He collected works of Maine artists and had an admirable, spare writing style. Several of us remember Jerry at his best onour glorious cruises off New England on the Erdman's family yawl.
Jerry was a trustee of the Millbrook School and the Portland Art Museum. A founder of the Islands Institute, he held a deep concern for the environment of the Maine coast. As a trustee, he asked difficult questions, yet he was generous, gracious, and witty.
Jerry married Margo Straus in 1963. To Margo, their sons Jeremy and Laurence, and his brothers Jim '54 and George '64, the Class extends its deepest sympathy.
