Keith died Dec. 2, 2016, at Duke University Hospital. He was born in Stamford, Conn., and was raised in New Canaan.

He came to Princeton from Milton Academy. At Princeton he majored in chemistry and was a member of Savoyards, Theatre Intime, the Student Christian Association, and the Pre-Med Society. He took his meals at Campus.

After earning a medical degree at Columbia University, Keith embarked on a distinguished career in psychiatry and education. After a stint as a clinical associate at the National Institute of Mental Health, he taught at Stanford for five years, then moved to Duke in 1974 as the James B. Duke Professor of Psychiatry. In 1992 he became Duke’s chancellor and served as president from 1985 to 1993, after which he continued to teach and see patients. As president, he is credited with significantly expanding Duke’s national reputation as a research university.

He is survived by Brenda, his wife of 49 years and sister of Bob Barrowclough ’61; daughter Melissa Hanenberger ’92; sons Cameron, Tyler, and Bryson, and their families; and four grandchildren.
