Harden J. Crawford ’27
HARDEN J. CRAWFORD died July 5, 1993 at his home in Vero Beach, Fla.
"Fish," son of H. J. Crawford 1895, came to us from Pomfret School. He was a member of the freshman and varsity polo squads, the varsity fencing team, Whig Hall, and Cap & Gown Club. After several years as a broker, he shifted to managing boat sales and sail making. During WWII, he supervised ship building for the navy, rising to the rank of commannder U.S.N.R., receiving a commendation from the Third Naval District, and serving as a commander of the City Island Naval Base in NYC.
In 1929, he married Virginia Armitage of NYC. He was later divorced and in 1936, married Helena "Duckie" Stowe in NYC (her brother was the late Joe Prendergast, a roommate of Harden's).
After WWII, he was associated with Ballantines, a china and glass business, with his wife, his sister, and her husband, John Ballantine '29 (younger brother of Bob Ballantine '27). He lived in Rumson, N.J.
Harden also worked for several years in the real-estate business, but retired in 1972 and moved to Vero Beach, Fla. There, he was active in many local civic groups and keeping up his lifelong interest in boats and sailing.
He is survived by his widow, Duckie; son, Harden 111; two daughters, Mrs. Irving Harris and Mrs. Richard Lombard; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. To them, the class extends its sympathy in its loss of a colorful classmate.
