Harold Amerman Sutphen Jr. ’48

Body

Following service in the Army from 1944 to 1946, Harold joined our class in February 1947. Prior to that he graduated from Exeter.

At Princeton he was a member of Dial and played freshman and JV lacrosse. He graduated with high honors in mechanical engineering in June 1950 and married Greta Peterson that same month.

Most of Harold’s career was in the service of Westvaco Corp., where he spent 32 years leading to retirement in 1988 as senior vice president, division manager, and a director. His avocation was in aviation. He flew a Waco Biplane and held a commercial pilot’s license. Skeet and trap shooting were hobbies.

Harold died March 28, 2009.

In addition to Greta, Harold is survived by their three children, Judith, Pamela, and Peter, and five grandchildren. He always was enthusiastic about Princeton and was a regular at major reunions.
