Harold Calhoun Smith Jr. ’35
"SMITTY," "H.C.," OR "CALHOUN," as he was variously known to classmates, died Sept. 28, 1992, after a six-month bout with cancer. Smitty's death has deprived our Class and Princeton of one of its most enthusiastic alumni.
He was a true Southern gentleman, born in Greenville, S.C. He graduated from Lawrenceville, having been very active in sports and clubs. He won the New Jersey State championship in the pole vault in 1931.
At Princeton, Smitty majored in history at the School of Public and International Affairs, graduating cum laude. He was a member of the varsity track squad, interclub athletics, and a very active member of Elm Club, serving as V.P. in his junior year and president his senior year.
During WWII, Smitty was V.P. of Niagara Chlorine Products, in Lockport, N.Y., manufacturers of essential wartime chemicals. Later, he was a national sales manager, for 21 years, with the Carborundum Company in Niagara Falls, N.Y. In June 1969, Smitty retired to his native Greenville. He moved to Hilton Head Island in 1976.
A devoted member of '35, Smitty is survived by his widow, the former Jane Morrow Marks; a son, Harold Calhoun 111; three daughters, Zermah Dawes, jean Sutherland, and Mary Morton; two step-daughters, Cynthia Coward and Jane Marks; six grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Gaylord; to whom the Class expresses its sincere sympathy.
