Harrington Putnam ’55
Harrington "Tony" Putnam died of AIDS Dec. 4, 1990, at home in Charlotte, N.C. The son of Harrington Putnam '28, Tony prepared at Kent. At Princeton, he majored in English, was a member of Quadrangle Club and the championship 150 lb. crew, and was active in the foreign student service of the S.C.A. His roommates in Brown Hall were Larry Phipps, Kerck Kelsey, Andrew Carey, Carey Williams, and Win Lincoln.
After a tour of duty as a military intelligence officer in South Korea, Tony graduated from the Parsons School of Design and did further graduate work at the Fontainebleau School of Art and Music in France.
Tony designed wall coverings, textiles, and furniture for such companies as Brunschwig & Fils, F. Schumacker & Co., The Warner Co., Natl. Gypsum Co., Spring Mills (sheets), Duralee Fabrics Ltd., Samercand Selections, and Tony Putnam, Inc. He later designed three-dimensional forms and lamps, decorative accessories, and screens for Heygill Imports. His major freelance design work is in many well-known collections.
In 1981, Tony married Gail Williams. He moved to Charlotte full time in 1988 and developed a special interest in Stephen's Ministry.
Tony is survived by his widow; his stepfather; his mother, Barbara Crocker; a brother, Tarrant; and a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Hardison.
