Burte received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from New York University, a master’s from MIT, and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton in 1950. He was on active duty in the Air Force from 1953 to 1956 and in the Air Force Reserve through 1964.

His lifetime of duty to country continued in his serving in various senior roles at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, culminating in his retirement in 1995 as chief scientist of the Air Force Materials Laboratory.

Burte is survived by Miriam, his wife of 54 years; three sons; and two grandchildren.
