Harry H. Bingham Jr. ’52

Body

HARRY BINGHAM DIED at home in Berkeley, Calif., Aug. 24, 1994, after a long struggle with cancer. His memorial service was held in the Great Hall of the faculty club at U.C.-Berkeley, where he had been a professor for 30 years.

At Princeton, Harry majored in physics, played freshman and varsity soccer for four years, belonged to Prospect Club, and worked as a research asst. for two years.

Harry and Judith Wells married in 1960, the same year he received his Ph.D. from Cal. Tech. Two years at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris got him started in bubble-chamber research, and two more as a Ford Foundation Scholar in Geneva established his career in high-energy-particle research.

Arriving in Berkeley in 1964, Harry and his family engaged the cultural diversity of the Bay Area: they sailed, skied the Sierras, and enjoyed the beauty of the Berkeley hills. Harry was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society, published 100 research papers, joined the physics division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, and continued to hone his skills at poker.

Harry is survived by Judith; three children, Harry B., Sanford, and Alison; two grandsons; a sister; and his mother. To them, we offer our profound sympathy.
