Harry A. Logan Jr. ’47

Prominent businessman, generous philanthropist, ardent opera lover, world traveler, and avid skier—Harry was a man of many interests and talents. He died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Apr. 12, 1989, in Warren, Penn., where he was born.

A graduate of the Hill School and of Princeton (magna cum laude), Harry spent three years with the Army in the Pacific during WWII. He served as executive V.P. of United Refining until 1957, when he succeeded his late father as chairman of the board and president. During his tenure, United grew to become a Fortune 500 company, with a refining capacity of more than 60,000 barrels of oil per day. He was a director of the National Petroleum Refiners Assn., Pennbank, the Warren Foun¬dation, the Chautauqua Inst., and Allegheny College. Harry also supported education and the arts through various trusts. Among them is the Harry A. Logan Jr. Fund for the Performing Arts, which benefits the sym¬phony orchestra in Chautauqua Shores.

Harry is survived by his widow Kay, son Thomas Harry, and sister Marian Wendell, all of Warren. To them the class extends its heartfelt condolences while saluting his life of achievement.
