Harry O. H. Frelinghuysen ’38

Body

HARRY OSBORNE HAVEMEYER FRELINGHUYSEN, philanthropist, civic leader, and twin brother of our v.p., Peter, died Mar. 30, 1994, of cancer. He was in the fifth of seven generations of Frelinghuysens to attend Princeton so far and was a loyal alumnus.

Harry majored in English and French and went on to Yale Law School. In 1941, he joined the army air force. From 1946-47, he served in the Korean military government, then manned the Korean desk at the State Dept. through 1952. Thereafter, he managed the family affairs and "indulged in a little horseraising." Other interests included arts and charities, the most important to him being the Assn. to Benefit Children. He took great pride in the role he played in its formation and growth. He also was a leader in New Jersey's Historical Society and in the New Jersey Thoroughbred Breeding Assn. But he was not one to blow his own horn and most of us were unaware of his many other good works.

Harry is survived by his widow, Marian Kingsland; son George L. K. '73; stepson Henry W. ScherrThoss; brothers George L. and Peter '38; a sister, Frederica Emert; and seven grandchildren. To his large family, we send our sincere sympathy.
