Harry A. Volz Jr. ’31

Body

Harry August Volz Jr., who had suffered poor health for most of his life, and had been wheelchair bound for the last five years in a nursing home, died Jan. 23, 1995. He was born in Louisville, Ky., where he attended Male H.S. At Princeton, he was a member of the squash team and of Court Club.

After graduation, he worked for his father at Zorn & Co. in the grain business, and spent a year at the Indiana Ordnance Works in Charleston. Then he married Elizabeth O'Neil Stout, a cousin of our Eddie O'Neil, in Tucson. Back in Louisville, he had to retire early, but then worked as deacon and director of finance of the Fourth Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Louisville Country Club and of the Pendennis Club.

With golf and swimming having given way to plain relaxation, he ranked gin rummy as both a sport and a hobby, but also enjoyed walking and reading. On some winters, he found his way to Florida, and in 1977, traveled to London.

His family benefited from his illness, became he could be present at their sports and activities, and he was such fun to talk with—not an absentee father! He remained devoted to Princeton and rejoiced in reminiscences of Buzzer Hall, Reunions, etc.

Betty died in l 990. Surviving Harry arc three children, Alexander A., Harry A. III, and Elizabeth O'Neil Lawton, and six grandchildren. To his family, the class extends deep sympathy.
